Mastering Hand and Wrist Rotations in Wing Chun Wooden Dummy Training
Welcome to Lesson 1 of our exclusive Wing Chun wooden dummy training series. This lesson introduces a unique and never-before-seen approach to practicing the Muk Yan Jong (wooden dummy). Before progressing to the traditional wooden dummy form, it is essential to build a solid foundation—just as one must first master Siu Nim Tao before learning Chum Kiu or Biu Tze in the Wing Chun system.
In this first lesson, you will learn the correct technique for wrist and hand rotation around the wooden dummy arm. These fundamental movements are critical for developing proper structure, pressure control, and connection during training. Without understanding these hand and wrist transfers, it is impossible to truly grasp the purpose and benefits of wooden dummy practice.
You will also discover how each hand movement corresponds with footwork and body turning, which is vital for generating power and maintaining balance. Through these movements, you'll develop sensitivity to:
• Direction of force
• Amount of pressure
• Connection during transitions
This foundational lesson includes detailed training on how to transfer:
• From Inside Tan Sau to Outside Tan Sau, and vice versa
• From Inside Tan Sau to Outside Fok Sau
• From Outside Tan Sau to Inside Man Sau
• From Outside Fok Sau to Inside Man Sau
• From Inside Man Sau to Inside Tan Sau
At the end of this lesson, all transitions are combined into one flowing drill, designed to enhance your timing, structure, and energy flow. We strongly recommend practicing each element individually before moving on to the complete drill, which should be performed at the end of your training session.
By the end of this class, you’ll have a much deeper understanding of how to maintain contact with the dummy arm, control force direction, and build the tactile awareness that is key to advanced Wing Chun.
Start building your Wing Chun foundation the right way. Train with focus, precision, and intent — and see you in Lesson 2.
